Default "Penalty for duplicate content" Google?

Does the term "penalty for duplicate content" actually exist in google's vocabulary?

Everybody believes that there is penalty for duplicate content a severe penalty which will cause your website to be banned or removed from google list. Well in my recent research in google algo i have come across several articles about does google really penalize for duplicate content. who can tell this better than google itself, and there is no such phrase as penalty for duplicate content. They don't care how many times same article exists in different websites or who has put the article first. Its only goal is to satisfy the customers by getting range of relevant results to keywords used.

At the same time if there 2 article of same content it does not necessarily mean google will place both the articles or content. It can and it cannot. When google comes across same article on different websites then google takes few factors into consideration and decides to choose appropriate content.

But this is also true that Google and even every search engine likes fresh and unique content rather then duplicate one.
Why should Google gives priority to duplicate content if the same content exists in their database?
Penalty words in Google's directory dosent exists physically but it exist in the action of Google when the criteria of ranking comes.

I can agree more with you. You know it takes much resources to run a search engine and get the bot crawling webpages around the world. Google wouldn't be happy to waste time and resources only to crawl and index content which have existed in their database.

Google has a high priority objective of customer satisfaction and thus is always keen to improving the search results to cater to specific requirements of viewers. With this in mind Google takes some unwanted steps like penalizing sites with duplicate content, which on there part is absolutely correct and required. I have not heard of Google completely banning the website, but affecting the ranking does take effect. It would take serious duplication with extreme spamming for Google to ban a website.

I don't know about Google's policy for duplicate content but I agree with Gopi, as Google or any other search engine will never like to annoy it's users by providing repetitive information in search results.

Getting penalized by Google can be sometimes unfair, as many business owners have similar kind of pages and content because the product range specifications are same. Or if they need to have different websites for different regions, these websites are bound to have duplicate content.

Yeah, for specific type of information search engines should change their policies as some words can not be replaced by any other substitute words i.e. technical specification of vehicles of electric components can not be presented with different kind of contents on each website.

Hmmmm, Travis has raised a very good point here, even I would like to add one more example as Interviews given by celebrities and Industrialists can not be posted in other words as they are necessary to be presented as accepted originally.
