It should have some indirect benefit because it help visitors to recognize your site through the icon which shows up in the tab and it help somewhat in branding your logo.

I dont think favicon can help you in SEO, you can create Icon through this. May be it is good for you as a branding purpose or the Better visibility

Getting a favicon added to your website would currently cause no help for you in search engine rankings.Though it may be helpful in future. Favicon might be an additional step towards branding though. Yes one thing for sure, for me it helps me identify the particular tab among others opened in a single browser window.

Most of the people bookmarks / favorites list is a very cluttered place. By using favicon you can have your site bookmarking stand out with a nice graphical reminder of your site beside advantage is it will get more attention compared to normal bookmarking of site and regarding SEO it will improve your ranking but change will be very small ...hope it helps

If you ask me, favicon doesn't make a difference when we speak of search engine results. Although, we may consider it as branding as Saurabh mentioned earlier.

thanks for the replies guys i also did my part of research and this is what i got, I'd say it's an indirect benefit - favicon = logo = branding = memorable = visitors remember you = they come back = links. thanks for support

Very Well stated. Now you've seemed to got it right. I hope you are aware of the fact that you can create custom favicons for your domain.

although favicon helps you finding your favorite entries there are many limitations associated with Favicon like the icon disappears once the cache is cleared. Other than IE browsers don't place it in bookmarks and instead it is placed in addresses bar.

duh!!! its a common sense, not only favicon but the whole site goes bye bye if th cache is cleared. N i dont see no problem in bookmarking sites in other browsers they work just fine let it be firefox, opera, safari, flock, netscape, seamonkey, maxthon anything. If you have not noticed this is the era of competition only the best survives so all browsers are constantly improving their quality services.
