What is WildCard SSL? Can somebody explain please?

A wildcard ssl certificate secures website and an unlimited number of its subdomains. For example, a single wildcard certificate can secure both www.abc.com and blog.abc.com.

Both wildcard and regular ssl certificate secures website similarly. However, few servers might need a dedicated IP for each subdomain on the wildcard.
