I have got a SSL certificate for my website, but while installing it I am getting an error stating that I require a dedicated IP. I am not sure why this is happening as I have not heard anything about having a dedicated IP for SSL.

You'll need a dedicated/exclusive/non-shared IP address to install an SSL certificate on your domain. If you have purchased the SSL certificate from your web hosting service provider, you can confirm if they'll provide you with a dedicated IP. Most of the service providers provide a free IP with the SSL certificate purchase.
I agree with Nishant, the issue that you are facing is because of the lack of a dedicated IP. With some changes in your hosting package, you should be able to acquire a dedicated IP which will solely used by you. Normally in a shared hosting environment, one IP is shared by all the account holders on that account.
